Boxed warning on this class of medication. In rodent studies GLP-1 medications caused thyroid C-cell tumors. It is not known whether this happens in people. Tell your provider about any lump in your neck, hoarseness or trouble swallowing.
In the SURMOUNT-1 trial, adults taking FDA-approved tirzepatide lost an average of 15% to 21% of body weight over 72 weeks depending on dose, compared with about 3% on placebo. That trial studied the branded product. Compounded medications are prepared by state-licensed pharmacies and are not FDA-approved. They have not been studied in those trials, and individual results vary.
